The Society for Macedonian Studies (SMS) was founded in 1939 by A. Letsas and S. Kyriakidis with the purpose of studying the linguistic, archaeological and folk material of Macedonia and of promoting the cultivation of learning throughout the region.
Its publishing activities are tremendous, covering a wide range of subjects, concerning literature, folk customs, history, law and theology. The Society also publishes two magazines, "Macedonian [Issues]" and "Greek [Issues]". Its headquarters, the Society for Macedonian Studies House, is also home to an art gallery and the State Theater of Northern Greece.
