With Yiorgos Theotokas as president and Socrates Karantinos as manager, the State Theater of Northern Greece (STNG) raised its curtain for the first time at Philippi in 1961 with "Oedipus Rex".
Since 1962, when it installed its offices in the Society for Macedonian Studies House, it has had a wide range of activities: under the management of Volanakis and Evangelatos, among others, its repertory has often been very avant-garde, earning it an excellent reputation throughout Greece.
It founded the first regional theaters in northern Greece, as well as the Thessaloniki Drama School (1973), the Children's Theater (1977) and the Aenao Dance Theater (1982). Today it maintains three permanent stages and gives performances all over the country.
