Late period of Ottoman rule (1700-1913)
The Monasteries of Mount Athos Engraving, 1889 |
In the sphere of church-painting in Macedonia, as in that of ecclesiastical architecture, the year 1830, the date of the foundation of the Greek state, does not mark a chronological boundary, since Ottoman domination only ended here with the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. The artistic tradition thus continued without break throughout the entire 19th century, though influenced by the art of the free Greek state, which acted as the model for the cultural life of the Greeks still living under Ottoman rule.
